Photo Gallery + Hyperlapse Video: Lorde commands and captives Boston Calling

There was a weird vibe in the air Saturday evening at Boston Calling. Organizers of the music festival had just cleared City Hall Plaza under the threat of thunder and lightning storms crashing Eastern Massachusetts, forcing roughly 15,000 spectators to shelter-in-place within City Hall’s atrium, the dozens of nearby bars around Faneuil Hall, and the Government Center parking garage.

After a few hours of rain delays and the cancellation of performances by Girl Talk and Volcano Choir, word spread through the area that the gates would soon re-open and Lorde would take the stage at 9 p.m. There was a mad dash from the Congress Street gates to the Red Stage, where Lorde would hold court and give one of the most commanding and captivating performances this town has ever seen.

On this night, Lorde was the savior.

Check out our exclusive hyperlapse of fans returning to the City Hall grounds — taking advantage of a chance to get up close to the teenaged pop maestro — and relive the performance via our photo gallery, shot through the lens of Vanyaland’s Eddy Photograph.
