Listen to the first Best Song of 2014: SKATERS’ whirlwind-pop jam ‘Miss Teen Massachusetts”

SKATERS, a New York-based rock band with tentacle ties to Boston, Los Angeles, and London, first shook our once-sturdy foundations last year with the freak-out cyclo rouser “I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How)”.

Now they’re back with “Miss Teen Massachusetts,” maybe the first best song of 2014, and the first taste of debut LP Manhattan, out next month (pre-order it here). SKATERS could be our country’s answer to the Arctic Monkeys (a notion even more evident on recent track “Stood Up”.)

While in Los Angeles a few years ago, SKATERS’ Michael Ian Cummings and Noah Rubin began making music together as former Boston band the Dead Trees. After hooking up with Londoner Joshua Hubbard (the Paddingtons, Dirty Pretty Things), they rounded out the project with a home base of New York City and the added talents of Bostonians Dan Burke (Viva Viva, the Lot Six) and Tommy Allen (Drug Rug).

So if you had wondered why they were nominated for two Boston Music Awards — in the Best Boston Artist Who Doesn’t Live In Boston and Rock Act of the Year categories — there’s your answer. For the record, they lost out to Lady Lamb The Beekeeper and Deer Tick, respectively.

But fear not — bigger things appear to be in store for 2014. A global breakout is imminent.
