Second re-birth: Watch Augustines’ new music video for ‘Cruel City’ // 10.21 + 10.22 @ the Paradise

Augustines have always thrived on new beginnings. Formed from the fiery ashes of Pela — perhaps the most underrated band of the 2000s — Billy McCarthy and Eric Sanderson re-emerged as We Are Augustines in 2010. That debut, Rise Ye Sunken Ships, was about exorcising personal demons as well as the duo’s musical roots. Now, on the follow-up, Augustines feel brand new once again: They’ve dropped the “We Are” from their moniker, relocated to Seattle, and have a self-titled LP en route this January.

The first slice of new tunes is “Cruel City,” which finds the gritty Americana trio wrestling with some sunnier rhythms. It feels optimistic. It feels like another new beginning.
