Icona Pop drop new single ‘Girlfriend,’ announce tour, hit the ‘Dise 09.19.13

A lot of bands have the distinction of releasing the so-called “Song of the Summer,” but Swedish electro pop duo ICONA POP have pulled a deuce with “I Love It,” which now threatens to be the official mainstream Summer Jam in 2013 after all the indie kids got off on it last year. Two years of Song of the Summer acclaim? When has that ever happened?

To be sure things don’t fade out now that we’ve heard the song roughly a billion times — from Girls to the pill to Good Morning America to TV commercials to the car driving down your street right now — since I first wrote about it almost exactly a year ago, Caroline and Aino have released a follow, up, the appropriately bubbly and battle-cryish “Girlfriend.” Huffington Post writes: The song has Icona Pop covering words made famous by Tupac, and later covered by Jay-Z… Icona Pop repeatedly sing lyrics from Tupac’s “Me and My Girlfriend,” with the phrase “All I need in this life of sin/Is me and my girlfriend.”

The pair is also hitting the road for their first-ever headlining tour, bringing along K.Flay & Sirah for a string of shows. Their run hits Boston at the tail end, a September 19 gig at the Paradise, and tickets just went on sale today.

Check out “Girlfriend” below, as well as their full run of tour dates.
