Boston Calling adds Viva Viva and Royal Teeth to its two-day lineup

By winning the SonicBids “Emerging Artists” competition, Boston garage rock veterans Viva Viva and Louisiana dance-pop sextet Royal Teeth have been added to next weekend’s Boston Calling music festival.

Both acts have new records out this month: Royal Teeth’s debut EP Glow dropped August 13, and Viva Viva released the Dead In Yr Tracks EP via Fort Point Recordings on August 6.

Based on the complexions of each day’s lineup, we’ll assume Viva Viva will play the more rock-heavy Saturday lineup headlined by Vampire Weekend, Local Natives, and Gaslight Anthem; while Royal Teeth will slot Sunday alongside Passion Pit, Major Lazer, and Wolfgang Gartner. Good fits on both days. Viva Viva join Bearstronaut and You Won’t as Boston bands on the fest’s lineup. And of course, Passion Pit got their start here.

Check out the word on the submission process from the folks at Boston Calling, as well as some music after the jump:

Both Boston Calling’s May and September line-ups were co-curated by Aaron Dessner of The National and have drawn thousands of ticketholders as well as national praise for the talented and diverse artists.

After announcing September’s lineup, the festival received nearly 1,000 requests from bands locally and across the country eager to perform at this scale of a festival. While the festival will open with two exciting young local acts, You Won’t and Bearstronaut, producers at Crash Line Productions, the team behind Boston Calling, answered the request by tapping Sonicbids, which has previously worked with festivals such as Bonnaroo and South by Southwest.

On June 24, bands were asked to register for free with Sonicbids, create a profile and an electronic press kit, and submit their music to the Boston Calling contest. From there, Crash Line Productions, the team behind Boston Calling, reviewed all band submissions, narrowed it down to ten bands and then selected its two winners – Royal Teeth and Viva Viva. Each band received a $500 cash prize from Sonicbids in addition to an opening slot on the Boston Calling lineup.
