Taylor Swift, the internet, and Boston just don’t seem to mix. Last year, the pop star held an online contest through Papa John’s to perform live for young students, and online trolls conspired to send her to the Horace Mann School For The Deaf in Allston. The Brighton Avenue school was deemed ineligible but received a $50,000 donation (you know, for their troubles), and everyone moved on with their lives.
Yesterday, Boston’s Kiss 108 FM canceled a “Taylor Swift’s Biggest Fan” contest after 4chan and Reddit users guided a 39-year-old dude named Charles towards easy victory. Charles apparently just wanted to catch a hearty whiff of TaySway’s golden blonde locks, but Kiss 108 FM wouldn’t let any “Sparks Fly” between the two.
We’re not sure if Charles won the contest outright or if it was still ongoing — with an insurmountable creeper lead — but either way, the game is up, just days before Swift is set to perform Friday and Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
According to the NME, the station issued a statement: “Disappointingly, we have determined that the integrity of the ‘Taylor Swift’s Biggest Fan’ contest has been compromised. In accordance with our contest rules, effective immediately, the contest has been terminated. We apologize to all of our loyal listeners who have participated.”
The “Biggest Fan,” in this case, was “a 39-year-old man” named Charles who wrote in his online profile that he “love[s] Taylor so much and don’t care that both adults and children mock me for it.”
Seems innocent enough, right? Guys approaching 40 can admire Taylor, too, right? I mean, there’s no chance of never ever getting back together if you can’t get together in the first place.
Well, in an effort to stir up the internet, a friend of Charles — no, we can’t prove just yet it was David Thorpe, the man who infamously sent Pitbull to Alaska — appealed to 4chan with the following: “My creepy 39-year-old friend named Charles would like to crush all those girls’ dreams (and then sniff Taylor Swift’s hair cos he’s into that) by winning this instead… Help him crush the dreams of these girls and give him a chance to make a complete ass of himself by blatantly just sniffing her hair with the cameras rolling.”
Sucks for Charles. There’s always Miley.
